To aid in his ministry to the Jewish people, Jesus was given the ability to perform miracles (such as healing the blind, bringing dead people back to life, etc.), all by the permission of ALLAH rather than of his own power. According to the popular opinion and Muslim traditions, Jesus was not crucified but instead, he was raised up by ALLAH unto the heavens. This "raising" is understood to mean through bodily ascension.
Many Muslims believe that Jesus will return to earth near the Day of Judgment to restore justice and to defeat Masih ad-Dajjal ("the false messiah", also known as the Antichrist).
Like all prophets in Islam, Jesus is considered to have been a Muslim (i.e., one who submits to the will of ALLAH), as he preached that his followers should adopt the "straight path" as commanded by ALLAH. Islam rejects the Trinitarian Christian view that Jesus was ALLAH incarnate or the son of ALLAH, that he was ever crucified or resurrected, or that he ever atoned for the sins of mankind. The Quran says that Jesus himself never claimed any of these things, and it furthermore indicates that Jesus will deny having ever claimed divinity at the Last Judgment, and ALLAH will vindicate him. The Quran emphasizes that Jesus was a mortal human being who, like all other prophets, had been divinely chosen to spread ALLAH's message. Islamic texts forbid the association of partners with ALLAH (shirk), emphasizing a strict notion of monotheism (tawhīd).
Numerous titles are given to Jesus in the Quran and in Islamic literature, the most common being al-Masīḥ ("the messiah"). Jesus is also, at times, called "Seal of the Israelite Prophets", because, in general Muslim belief, Jesus was the last prophet sent by ALLAH to guide the Children of Israel. Jesus is seen in Islam as a precursor to Muhammad (S.A.W.W), and is believed by Muslims to have foretold the latter's coming.
Birth
The Quranic account of Jesus begins with a prologue, which describes the birth of his mother, Mary, and her service in the Jerusalem temple, while under the care of the prophet and priest Zechariah, who was to be the father of John the Baptist (Arabic : Yahya). The Quran then goes on to describe the conception of Jesus. Mary, whom the Quran states was chosen by ALLAH over the women of all the worlds, conceives Jesus while still a virgin. |

Mary had withdrawn into the Temple, where she was visited by the angel Gabriel (Arabic: Jibrail) to give the glad tidings of a holy son. The Quran states that ALLAH sent the message through the angel Gabriel to Mary that ALLAH had honoured Mary among the women of all nations. The angel also told Mary that she will give birth to a holy son, named Jesus, who will be a great prophet, to whom ALLAH will give the Gospel. The angel further told Mary that Jesus will speak in infancy and maturity and will be a companion to the most righteous. When this news was given to Mary, she asked the angel how she could conceive and have a child when no man had touched her. The reply of the angel to Mary was, "Even so: Allah createth what He willeth: When He hath decreed a plan, He but saith to it, 'Be,' and it is!"
The Quran, therefore, states that Jesus was created from the act of ALLAH's will. The Quran compares this miraculous creation of Jesus with the creation of Adam, where ALLAH created Adam by his act of will (kun-fa-yakun, meaning "Be and it is"). According to the Quran, the same answer was given to the question of Zechariah, when he asked how his wife, Elizabeth, could conceive a baby as she was very old.
Muslims respect and revere Jesus (peace be upon him). They consider him one of the greatest of ALLAH’s messengers to mankind. The Quran confirms his virgin birth, and a chapter of the Quran is entitled ‘Maryam’ (Mary). The Quran describes the birth of Jesus as follows: |
(Remember) when the angels said, “O Mary, ALLAH gives you good news of a word from Him (ALLAH), whose name is the Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, revered in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near (to ALLAH). He will speak to the people from his cradle and as a man, and he is of the righteous.” She said, “My Lord, how can I have a child when no mortal has touched me?” He said, “So (it will be). ALLAH creates what He wills. If He decrees a thing, He says to it only, ‘Be!’ and it is.”
(Quran, 3:45-47)
Jesus was born miraculously by the command of ALLAH, the same command that had brought Adam into being with neither a father nor a mother. ALLAH has said:
The case of Jesus with ALLAH is like the case of Adam. He created him from dust, and then He said to him, “Be!” and he came into being.
(Quran, 3:59)
During his prophetic mission, Jesus performed many miracles. ALLAH tells us that Jesus said:
“I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. I make for you the shape of a bird out of clay, I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by ALLAH’s permission. I heal the blind from birth and the leper. And I bring the dead to life by ALLAH’s permission. And I tell you what you eat and what you store in your houses....”
(Quran, 3:49)
Muslims believe that Jesus was not crucified. It was the plan of Jesus’ enemies to crucify him, but ALLAH saved him and raised him up to Him. And the likeness of Jesus was put over another man. Jesus’ enemies took this man and crucified him, thinking that he was Jesus. ALLAH has said:
...They said, “We killed the Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of ALLAH.” They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but the likeness of him was put on another man (and they killed that man)...
(Quran, 4:157)
The Miracles of Jesus
According to the Quran, Jesus, on whom be peace, performed the following miracles by Allah’s leave:
- Spoke while he was only a baby.
- Healed those born blind.
- Healed the lepers.
- Revived the dead.
- Breathed life into a bird made of clay.
Neither Muhammad (S.A.W.W) nor Jesus came to change the basic doctrine of the belief in one ALLAH, brought by earlier prophets, but rather to confirm and renew it.
